DESIIGNER
G.O.O.D. Music, Inc. and Def Jams Records
Desiigner. The one and only white X6 driving, Atlanta-broad claiming, G.O.O.D. Music signee, who released what was probably the most recognizable song for the first half of 2016, Panda . Born Sidney Royel Selby III on May 3, 1997, in the Bedford–Stuyvesant projects of Brooklyn, NY; Desiigner dropped his previous monikers and uploaded the track that would not only put his name on The G.O.O.D. Music roster alongside the likes of Big Sean and 2Chainz , but also jump his net-worth up a million dollars, and launch him onto The XXL Freshman 2016 platform.
At barely 18, Desiigner found himself as one of the most iconic artists of the past year -- gaining a huge following and massive notoriety after his personal release of Panda, only to be quantified by Kanye's overly enthusiastic appropriation of the song for his own album, TLOP; he was basically signed to G.O.O.D. Music on the spot...not to mention all the Future comparisons which surely added to his stream and download count.
This, along with his unmistakable energy, adlibs, and genuine gratitude for his overnight success, allowed him the opportunity to release his only studio project to date, New English. A 14 track album that has songs ranging from: 00:37 seconds to 6 minutes and 45 -- and while it does a decent job of outlining the sound and potential that Desiigner truly has...it falls short in comparison to any of the other XXL Freshman releases, as well as the expectations of what G.O.O.D. Music would accept as a worthy freshman album of his. Off of that release, I can listen to "Caliber" and "Make it out" weekly, but find it hard to put any other tracks on a playlist (excluding Panda of course). Even "Jet ," doesn't win me over with it's Pusha feature. BUT, none of this is to take away from the current day one-hit-wonder of rap that elevated his value from a no-name teenager to a G.O.O.D. Music artist, TLOP feature, and XXL Freshman in the matter of MONTHS. That recognition, from those so deeply embedded in the business of music producing, is what's worth taking note of. The potential qualified with his rise and simultaneous indoctrination into the rap scene.
And though not from Atlanta, Desiigner has found his own way to riff on top of southern trap beats that are reminiscent of something Future might lean to. While his voice tends to have a mumble-gravel texture to it like that of Future's, the constant incorporation of auto-tuning in modern hip-hop makes their similarities pointless; with rappers like Travis Scott and Tory Lanez being as mainstream as they are with as deep a dependency on synth-pitch correction as they do -- there really needs to be no difference aside from who they present themselves as. And Desiigner is a young, rowdy, energetic, mumble rapper with a constant smile who I believe will end up surprising a lot of people.
