Me And Your Mama - Childish Gambino

And when chaos seemed to finally envelop the world in mass riots throughout our country, Childish Gambino released a track that lit a path back to calm. Following what will be looked back on as one of the most defining moments in 2016, yet alone America's greater history -- The Presidential Electoral Results -- Donald Glover dropped the first single from his tremendously anticipated Junior year album titled,"Awaken, My Love!" set to come out December 2. The song, "Me and your Mama," is one of the most well structured, orchestrated, and genre-fused pieces of music I have heard in recent times, though, with that said, it is far from what would be considered a rap, if even hip-hop, track.

Post TPABF (To Pimp A Butterfly), the hip-hop genre as a whole became more inclusive of it's roots in Jazz and Soul music, this seems to be the mindset in which we find Childish Gambino has composed this song. Given, he has always been a more musically tuned rap artist than most, being how he defines his artistry is through both his lyrics and production's cohesion, this is a very clear and direct pivot from his previous releases in respect to whole albums and complete concepts.

A pitched piano lifts you ever so slightly off the ground, and slowly, over the course of two minutes carries you to the climatic change in which the beat drops from a breathy, Peter Pan-like, hypnotic chant of, "I'm so in love when we are smoking that la,la,la,la, la" to a vibrant second-coming of 70's Rock and Soul music epitomized in Lucifer's cackle followed by a passionate 2 minutes of Childish Gambino pushing every fiber of love from lust out his being. It is truly enchanting. Clearly a love song, but also blatantly more than that, Gambino erupts mid-hook with a, "Do what you want" and is launched by a sweeping gospel chorus behind him that keeps the energy for the remaining 4 minutes. He exudes angst, and spite, and passion, and pain; the levels that resonate in his voice are what set this song apart from anything else in relative time,  and anything in his personal discography, "Sober" isn't even close.

The narrative ends in a bridge, after having acknowledged the end of his relationship with whichever woman was able to conjure such a self-stripping piece of music from him, "Girl you know you really got a hold on me. So you know this isn't just puppy love." He beckons repeatedly until he voice blows out and we are left with the same pitched piano, which gently guides you back through your window, and into bed.

Throughout the six minute song your energy is used just as much as his and you are just as exhausted by the end as you know Childish was when recording. His ability to have you feel his emotions as your own, not relate, not sympathize, but feel them as your own experience is what makes this song and the anticipation for the remaining 10 tracks off the album so worth it.

So, LISTEN to the track, make sure to cop a copy of "Awaken, My Love!" December 2 and go see him on tour -- from experience, one of the most thought out live performances I have ever seen... but that's a different article.

For a taste of Gambino's abilities in this emotive arena check out Triple J's, "Like a Version" on Youtube video where he covers Tamia's ‘So Into You’  back in October 2015-- astoundingly well mind you.
