"Have you ever made a million dollars with your talent"
--Lil Uzi Vert, "Super Saiyan Trunks," LUV is Rage
Lil Uzi Vert is simply the future of rap. Having adopted qualities from his biggest influences growing up, like Manson and Khalifa , Uzi has managed to further blur the line between rock star and rapper like no other artist before him has sought to do so...a furthering of a Pharrell or A$AP Rocky mentality if you will.
With a rapid fire flow that reminded his friends of a (lil) machine gun, Symere Woods, born July 31, 1994 in Northern Philidelphia, became Lil Uzi Vert, and began rapping his way to riches.
After catching the attention of fellow Philly raised artists and DJs like Don Cannon and DJ Drama with his self-released tape, The Real Uzi, Vert was given the platform and finances to produce his first studio album, LUV is Rage .
With a signature style of flow and voice inflection that's essentially the by-product of Migos and Young Thug , Lil Uzi spits on beats that you would find anyone from Lil Yachty to Gucci Mane trying to hop on. LUV is Rage gave him hits like, Banned From T.V., Super Sayain Trunks , and Enemies .
Prior to his LUV is Rage release, Lil Uzi Vert was featured alongside A$AP Ferg and Rich The Kid on Carnage's "WDYW." A track that quickly became Uzi's calling card and allowed for the exposure his album received, to come....the Young Thug feature probably also helped.
Lil Uzi Vert, much like his fellow XXL counterpart, Lil Yachty , has found himself on the forefront of the new-wave scene and culture of the rap game. Completely genuine and unapologetic, Uzi, has defined his content as young and reckless. With "ya" being his signature ad-lib and flow's foundation, the majority of songs have a hook that involves him getting head from his enemies' girlfriends while still finding time to coast the world's stages making god-sums of money in the process. A playful, yet volatile, side of the positivity-music scene if you will.
Lil Uzi's music is a very direct expression of the momentum and constant elevation his life is taking. His fans are diehard and his enthusiasm for his music is unquestioned. As well as his ice...man does he has some crazy ice...Meowth...
He has easily released the most work out of any of the XXL Freshman aside from Anderson. Paak, and continues that pace steadily, dropping project after project with collaborative based cosigns after cosigns, including: LUV is Rage , Lil Uzi Vert vs The World , The Perfect LUV Tape , and 1017 vs The World . The latter being a joint project between Uzi and Gucci Mane .
5 projects in under a year with 6th ready to drop. Features and vouchers from the likes of Future , Wiz Khalifa, Young Thug, Mac Miller , Post Malone , Rich Homie Quan , A$AP Ferg, Gucci Mane, Lil Yachty, Playboi Carti , Migos, and more. Lil Uzi Vert, if nothing else, has a passionate work ethic when it comes to music.
And while he might not represent any company's creative directives yet, you can be sure that Lil Uzi has his mind narrowed in on the fashion world as well as his music. Outside of his style sonically, Vert has a very individualistic sense of taste when it comes to clothing and accessories too. Toting man-purses, pink embroidered jackets, crazy hair, a septum piercing, and other semi-feminine duds, Uzi has once again taken qualities from the likes of his influences and soaked them in a more millennial coating and then dressed them for himself.
Lil Uzi Vert is the coherent representation of what happens when a rapper creates his style from adopting qualities of other huge, single-lane, rap artists, like Gucci, Thugger, and Migos, and then has a perspective and dialect worth framing his stories through.
It doesn't really matter that every Uzi track has the same themes because his life is currently consumed with intake and outpour of women, money, jewelry, and drugs. For now, his songs all tell the same story, but with the amount of work he can put out in a single year, the growth I can guarantee we will see in Uzi over the next 2 years will be godly.
The thing I want everyone to take away from these young XXL Freshman is that they are given the perfect environment to thrive and grow their music from. They might not have the "talent" or "lyricism" that other mainstream artists do, but think about how perfected their craft will be in 5 years because of how early they got recognition and motivation from their idols. That's motivating, to say the least, and I truly believe that is where all their potential lies, in the application of acceptance as a means to better their craft.
